I have no doubts about needing a new garage. The stucco siding has pulled away leaving it "air conditioned" and likely a haven for neighborhood critters. We rarely use it for our car -- it is so narrow inside only the driver can get in and out. And the termite damage? Well let's just say there is some.
So, in a week, the wrecking crew will bring heavy equipment, and, I'm told, the garage will be leveled in four hour's time. The contractor gets very animated when he mimes the motions of some huge claw that will crash down through the roof and shred the garage into disposable chunks.
Therein lies my hypocrisy. Surely the garage door has some second life in some artist's studio. And the motion sensor spot light? Won't that be usable on the new garage? Look at those wood-shank shingles. Couldn't someone use these to make repairs to their own home?
Inside I will take down the overhead bike hooks that are fastened to the joists ... but the city inspector is insisting on a fireboard ceiling (the garage is shared with the neighbor). I won't be reusing the hooks in the new garage, so why bother.
Are there people who might be able to reuse some of these resources? Probably. Will I be able to find them? Probably not. Will I take the time to even try?
